On Monday 11th November, Year 5 attended the Dukes Poetry Together event in Westminster. Along with children from other Dukes schools and local primary schools, the children attended two poetry writing workshops, run by Coral Rumble, winner of the prestigious “Caterpillar Poetry Prize” and Claire Dyer who is a celebrated, published author and poet. They were given fascinating insights and top tips required for writing poetry.
Two of our Year 5 students recited their poem to a packed audience, including the renowned British broadcaster, writer and television presenter, Gyles Brandreth, who was officiating the event. Both girls did themselves proud and here is a copy of the poem “My friend always” which they recited together:
Make new friends keep the old,
One is silver the other is gold,
Circle is round, has no end,
That’s how long you’ll been my friend.
Hand in hand we understand,
We go together like sea and land.
This event is very prestigious and if you read the Telegraph newspaper, there may well be an article and picture in it this weekend – watch this space! Many congratulations to both girls for performing so brilliantly and representing The Lyceum so articulately.
